Size guide
- a bit that already fits well can serve as a guide for the correct size
- alternatively, measure the mouth width: place a bit gauge or soft string in the mouth at the point where the bit is to sit
- mark the ends and then measure the distance
- the bit width should be chosen so that the rings sit just outside or slightly beyond the corners of the mouth
- if the bit is too tight, pressure is created; if it is too wide, it can shift sideways
- for bits with freely moving rings, there should be about 1 cm of clearance on one side
- this allows the rings to rotate freely without pinching the lips
